Stocks on Wall Street rose modestly in late-day trading after falling nearly 700 points to open the session Friday.
At the start of the day's see-saw session, stock losses for the year totaled a staggering $8.3 trillion, as measured by the Dow Jones Wilshire 5000 Composite Index.
By day's end, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had risen 33.05, or 0.39 percent, to 8,612.24. At its low point Friday, the Dow was down 696 at 7,882.51.
The losses on the market reflect a heavy amount of panic selling by investors who are concerned about the global financial crisis and resultant credit crunch.
